Is there anything we can do?
For the past few years in Australia we’ve been saying “But I don’t like any of the candidates or their policies!” Now in Canada, following a no-confidence vote that resulted in the dissolution of its minority government, I’m reading of people saying the same thing: “I don’t like any of the candidates.”
Well, actually, I read a friend in Canada post on Facebook:
“Basically i have to pick between a closeted gay hating redneck, a 4 year old with a mustache, Colonel mustard, and a completely incoherent drunkard who has yet to discover that this is a FEDERAL election and it’s not about quebec.”
This has lead me to wonder that surely there must be something that we can do in this situation. If none of the candidates adequately reflect our political stance, there must be something that can be done to bring about change.
Off the top of my head, I have:
- Run as a candidate yourself
- Find a candidate you would support and contribute to their campaign in some way (either through donations, volunteering on their staff, raising public awareness of them)
But there must be other things we can do. What do you think? What can we do?
(The following responses will not be accepted: “we can’t do anything” and “don’t vote”.)
